First Visit

We look forward to your first visit with us. Depending on your reason for seeing us, you could be scheduled for either a Limited Evaluation or a Comprehensive Evaluation.

Limited Evaluation

When a new patient presents to our office with pain for a specific focused problem such as a toothache or a broken tooth, a limited evaluation is performed to diagnose the cause. Once a diagnosis is made, every effort will be taken to relieve the pain or repair the problem. This may involve a course of antibiotics or a referral to a specialist. At Sandia Smiles we try to see urgent/emergency patients as soon as possible from the time they call. Occasionally, treatment can be performed the same day as the evaluation. However, a complex medical history or treatment plan will require the initial evaluation and a second appointment to provide treatment on a separate day. After the initial concern has been resolved, patients will be scheduled for a “New Patient Comprehensive Evaluation.”

Comprehensive Evaluation

All new patients in our office will receive a comprehensive evaluation of their oral health. This initial appointment will consist of a review of your medical and dental history, soft tissue oral cancer screening, periodontal screening and recording, and a caries (decay) radiographic examination. Your vital signs will also be taken (pulse, BP, respirations) and recorded. Toward the end of the visit we will discuss any findings and explain your diagnosis and treatment options. At the conclusion of the evaluation we will create a comprehensive treatment plan. We often call it your personal oral health “game plan”. This “game plan” may be simple and only consist of regular cleanings. Or it may involve fillings, whitening, root canal therapy, or any other treatment options that you may need. Most importantly, it is your plan, designed and prioritized to help you “Smile with Confidence.”

Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your evaluation:

  • X-rays* (if applicable)
  • A list of your current medications
  • If you have dental insurance, bring the necessary identification cards and any benefit information you have.

PLEASE NOTE:

A parent or guardian must accompany all patients under the age of 18 at the initial or comprehensive exam visit. New patients are required to have an exam with the doctor prior to any cleanings with the hygienist. Please alert our office if you have any medical conditions that may be of concern prior to treatment (i.e,. diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.)
