Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and tooth supporting tissues. We sometimes call periodontal disease the silent tooth killer since unsuspecting patients may start feeling their teeth get loose and fall out. There are numerous disease processes which require different treatment approaches. Dental plaque and calculus (tartar) is the primary cause of gum disease in genetically susceptible individuals. The dentist will evaluate your gums in the initial comprehensive examination and advise you of the health of your gums. If periodontal therapy is indicated, we will determine the appropriate treatment and evaluate whether a gum specialist (periodontist) needs to be consulted.
