Having a beautiful smile may be even easier than you think. Many people achieve the look they’ve been dreaming of with our simple “whitening” procedure. Sometimes we hear this procedure referred to as “bleaching.” At the Sandia Smiles Dental Center we believe that we “bleach” our clothes, and “whiten” our teeth.
Whitening is safe, quick, and inexpensive. Let us know at any appointment if you would like to begin this procedure. You can lighten only your upper teeth or both the upper and lower, depending on how much of each shows when you talk and smile.
In only a day or two your custom whitening trays will be ready for you. We provide you with a special whitening agent that you put into the clear, nearly invisible trays. With only about an hour of wear per day, our special whitening agent bubbles stains right out of your enamel in a very short time without altering tooth structure or existing dental work in any way. After your teeth reach the brightness you want, only occasional treatment is needed to maintain your new smile.
Dental whitening can be used to correct many tooth discolorations. These discolorations may have been caused by staining, aging, or chemical damage to teeth. Using the latest in whitening technology, we can offer a safe method for creating a beautiful smile. In cases of extreme tooth discoloration, crowns, or veneers may be the only choice.
Whitening Procedure
Two appointments are needed for the whitening procedure. Your first appointment will include matching your tooth color with a shade guide and taking impressions of you teeth to have study models fabricated. This will take approximately fifteen minutes to a half an hour in the office. We will then make a customized “mouthguard” or “tray” which will hold the whitening solution against your teeth.
At your second appointment you will receive a take home kit which will include your custom trays and the whitening solution. We will also give you instructions on how to use the materials. This appointment will take approximately fifteen minutes to a half hour.
Is Tooth Whitening Safe?
Yes. Research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. Whitening is not recommended for children under 13 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.
How Long Do The Results Last?
By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. Brushing at least twice daily and regular flossing will help keep the surface stains off your teeth. Whitening toothpaste, and touch-ups with the whitening take-home gel will also help keep your teeth looking lighter. If you are a heavy smoker, or drink large quantities of coffee, tea, or red wine, then your teeth may need periodic touch-up to maintain their whiteness.
Sensitivity?
Some people experience temporary increased tooth sensitivity to cold during treatment. These symptoms disappear within one to three days after interruption or completion of the treatment. To decrease the symptoms of sensitivity we recommend using a “sensitivity toothpaste.” Supplemental fluoride gels or mouthwashes may also be prescribed to reduce sensitivity.
